Throughout his college career, he was in and out of the hospital due to issues with blood clots, and by the end of his brilliant college career, his health was beginning to fail. After experiencing health problems during recruiting season, no NFL teams were willing to risk hiring him. He went to play for the Canadian Football League, but developed pneumonia, and was released from his contract after playing only one game. He subsequently retired, and has focused on coaching college football since then.
