After graduating from college, Shakir Stewart opened his own recording studio and was quickly noticed by L.A. Reid, who brought him to Hitco Music Publishing. With an excellent eye for talent, he went on to sign such artists as Beyonce, Ciara, and Young Jeezy. He was also the Executive Vice President of Def Jam Records. Born on April 12, 1974, Stewart resided in Oakland, California. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He began building up a studio during college and eventually had several producers working for him. He was discovered by Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Hitco Music Publishing, which led to Beyonce’s signing and an eventual transition to working as an A&R consultant for LaFace Records. In 2004 he worked as vice president of Def Jam, signing Young Jeezy and Rick Ross. Stewart died on November 1, 2008 in Atlanta of a gunshot wound.
