He suffered from several health problems, including a bout with testicular cancer, a heart attack, and a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which went into remission. In 2010, he announced he was suffering from a condition called cirrhosis, which he contracted as a result of having hepatitis C. Schimmel was married twice, first to Vicki Schimmel in 1977; they had four children together, though their son, Derek, died of cancer as a child. He remarried and had two more children before his second wife, Melissa, filed for divorce in 2009.
