He served in the US Army from 1943 to 1947, and then graduated from the University of Missouri. He published a one-panel series called, “Spider”, in The Saturday Evening Post. This series became the basis for his most popular comic strip, “Beetle Bailey”. At its most popular, “Beetle Bailey” was read by 200 million people per day. He also launched the spin-off comics, “Hi and Lois”, “Boner’s Ark”, “Sam’s Strip”, and “Sam and Silo”, among many others.
