Carangi become addicted to heroin and she contracted AIDS, becoming the first famous woman to die from the disease. She also worked for brands including Giorgio Armani, Bloomingdale’s, Perry Ellis, Diane Von Furstenberg, Levi Strauss & Co., Maybelline, Gianni Versace, and Vidal Sassoon. A film titled “Gia” about her life was released on HBO in 1998. The movie starred Angelina Jolie as Gia. Jolie won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for her work in the movie.In 2003 a documentary about Gia titled “The Self-Destruction of Gia” was released. Gia Carangi passed away on November 18, 1986 at 26 years old from AIDS-related complications.
